About
Steve Magdaleno began his martial arts training at the ripe age of ten. As a child, Steve was brought up on a steady regiment of kung fu movies and Saturday morning pro wrestling, so you could say that it was inevitable that he should find his calling in the fight game.
Steve started his training as many young children in the United States do, in Tae Kwon Do. Seeing all those fancy kicks was enough to have him hooked on studying the art for the next five years. He achieved a 2nd degree black belt in it, before being enlightened to the true elements of combat. His older brother had rented a copy of U.F.C number two from the video store, and although Steve was crushed to see grapplers kicking the snot out of strikers, he soon switched to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu).
At age fifteen, Steve started to train at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California and continued to do so for the next four years. From there, Steve continued to train with his Jiu-Jitsu instructor, Carlos “Caique” Elias at the Caique Jiu Jitsu Academy in Carson, California. All along the way, Steve also wrestled in high school and competed in various grappling competitions.
Soon after graduating college and winning his Mixed Martial Arts professional debut, Steve would move to Japan, to further his MMA training. He would train at the famed Caesar Shootboxing Gym in Asakusa, Tokyo, while also training with his MMA team at Sakuguchi Dojo in the Komae, Tokyo. Although he found Japanese life difficult at first, things would do a complete 180 when he would join his team at Sakaguchi Dojo. Life was at times still hard, but there were always good people around so the experience was a worthwhile one. Steve Magdaleno would end his long sojourn in Japan by becoming the 2008 Pancrase Neo Blood Tournament winner, along with being named the MVP for the tournament that year.
In the present day, you can find Steve Magdaleno training at VMAT in El Segundo, California under Vladimir Matyushenko and training partner Jared Hamman. In his spare time, Steve enjoys the continual study of Japanese, watching Spartacus repeatedly, and a plethora of horror movies.
